Menstruation is a normal natural biological phenomenon for ladies. It is nature’s way of communicating to girls the onset of puberty and the journey to the possibility of motherhood. But this natural process, oftentimes, ends up being a curse. For some at least. Especially young girls in poor remote areas. A curse in the sense that the young girls are subjected to sorts of mental – and in some cases physical – anguish. These range from shaming and ridicule to being forced to engage in sex in exchange for sanitary pads and basic needs or into early marriages that end up in physical and emotional abuse. These young girls are therefore forced to drop out of school thereby ending up as housewives with limited means to fend for themselves, and compelled by the circumstances to wholly rely on their husbands and in unfortunate cases subjected to inescapable violence.

This is not just a story. This is happening. In Kenya’s remote areas tucked away from the scrutinizing eyes of the public. One of those areas is the Mukogodo in Laikipia North. This is why we, Poriscape Safaris, are holding this event: A one-day hike on Mt Kenya via the Naro Moru route (from Met Station to Picnic Rocks) on 28th of November 2020 to raise awareness on menstruation and gender issues and funds to support young girls in Mukogodo, Laikipia North with menstruation kits as well as organize education and training on gender matters to the youth in the area. The event will run from 7 am to 2 pm.

We therefore extending this invitation to you to kindly be part of this noble event and opportunity to change lives. Being part of this event means:

  • You are ensuring the young girls are not subjected to shame and ridicule any longer.
  • You are ensuring the young girls complete their education, get decent jobs and means of livelihood.
  • You are ensuring the young girls will not engage, anymore, in sex for pads.
  • You are ensuring the young girls will not be forced into early marriages because they have no voice and alternatives.
  • You are taking part in empowerment of the girl child and contributing towards an end to gender-based violence.

The proceeds of the hike will go towards supporting 5000 young girls in Laikipia North with menstruation kits that will serve them for between 4 and 10 years. These kits (entailing reusable pads and menstrual cups) will be distributed during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2020 through Mukogodo Girls Empowerment Programme. The funds raised will also be used to organize training and educational activities to the girls and boys in the region on gender issues.
